We love welcoming puppies. There is nothing better than sitting with a whelping mother and watching her give birth to one beautiful puppy after another. We assist as needed: making sure each puppy gets out of the amniotic sac in a timely fashion and that mama severs the umbilical cord with her teeth. We often extract fluids from a puppy’s lungs, throat, mouth, and nostrils and make sure we hear the life-affirming squeak that tells us that everything is okay. Sometimes there are challenges, like stalled labor or complications of birth. We stay ready for all kinds of situations.
Once all the puppies have safely arrived, there is a wonderful sense of peace in the whelping room. The new mother settles down and finds a comfortable spot. The puppies all find her teats, some with a little help. They are warm and satisfied, ready to start their new life outside the womb.

A sweet pair
Bernie Sitka and Damon make the sweetest breeding pair. Both of them are calm and friendly, wagging their tails at everyone they see. This was Bernie’s first pregnancy and birth, and she handled everything beautifully. She went into labor on her due date, waiting until close to midnight before giving birth to her first puppy, a girl. The next puppies came quickly, as if there was hardly any effort involved. Bernie’s instincts kicked in, and she started licking the newborns, gently pushing some of them with her nose to make room for the next arrival. By morning, she had ten beautiful puppies, and she was beaming with pride.

The Minnesotans
Bernie lives with a wonderful family in Rochester, Minnesota. When asked if they would like to help choose the theme, they immediately came up with a great idea: their home state. The puppies all have fun names that highlight something from our great neighbor to the north. Minnie is named after Minnesota. Lady is named for Lady’s Slipper, the state flower. Agate gets her name from Lake Superior Agate. Wally is named after the state fish, the great walleye. Doc could be a doctor at Mayo Clinic. Judy pays tribute to Judy Garland, who grew up in Minnesota. Paisley could live at Paisley Park, Prince’s recording studio. Of course Paul would hail from St. Paul, the state capital. Puck pays tribute to the popular sport of hockey. And Tater Tot? He is named in honor of Minnesota’s famous hot dish.

I highly recommend Bluff Country Bernedoodles!
